Amidst the louder than ever cries these days continuing the age-old philosophical debate as to the merits of porn as a form of art, Kayden Kross has quietly emerged as one of the medium’s most formidable craftspeople. And with Trashy Love Story, she slyly throws figurative mud in the face of any who would reject the notion that art and porn can coexists.
Gleefully toying with the very concept of finding beauty in the realm of the lowbrow—her meticulously manifested aesthetic one of what might be termed “white trash chic”—Kross lights upon a glorious muse as the movie’s centerpiece in the form of 2017 AVN Best New Starlet Holly Hendrix.
Walking the line between a very loosely structured feature and a series of laced together encounters, the movie follows Hendrix as she meanders with lost, wounded eyes around a trailer park purgatory in search of some sort of salvaging connection.
One place she definitely does not find it is with boyfriend Donnie Rock—sporting a Todd Parker horseshoe mustache—whom she’s giving road head at movie’s start in his red circa-early-’90s Mitsubishi as he chugs a Heineken. They arrive at a house party where he promptly disappears into a bathroom with a poufy-haired Kenzie Reeves to have her finish the job Holly started.
Meanwhile, Holly follows “nice guy” Jessy Jones off into a bedroom, where after he strums a few chords for her on his guitar, she offers herself up to him, evolving into a raucous, gorgeously window-lit anal scene.
Back at Donnie’s actual trailer home, he walks into a conversation between sister Evelyn Claire (a newcomer to watch, it should be noted) and friend Riley Nixon. Tauntingly asking if they’re talking about him and his “trashy charm,” he unabashedly whips out his dick, and within moments, Riley is sucking it, as Evelyn storms off in disgust.
Next up, Riley finds herself hopping onto another dick, namely Stallion Strong’s, in a bedroom somewhere nearby with string lighting dappling the wood paneling and bedframe. And back in the trailer, Holly finds herself face to face once more with Donnie, resulting in a blowout fight after which Evelyn swoops in to try and convince her (not for the first time, apparently) of the exhortation she gave her earlier in the day: “You know what your problem with men is? … You like women.” The Sapphic session that ensues between them is an unhinged, body-bending showstopper.
It’s tempting to say that Trashy Love Story is what it might look like if Harmony Korine made a porn movie, but truth be told, that wouldn’t be doing it justice. This movie is hauntingly indelible in its own way, without any of the sort of imagery that falls into the “can’t be unseen” arena. One thing’s for sure: We would much sooner watch this 100 more times than ever again sit through Trash Humpers.
